Wenger - No doubts about Van Persie anymore

By Joe Brewin

Arsène Wenger says Robin van Persie’s role in the Arsenal team is now set in stone.

The striker hit a hat-trick in Saturday’s stunning 5-3 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge to help the Gunners climb the Premier League table once again.

Van Persie’s treble continues an incredible run of goalscoring form and has vindicated Wenger’s decision to alter the Dutchman’s position when Arsenal first adopted a 4-3-3 formation.

“Robin has scored 28 in 27 games and still people tell me he is not a centre forward,” Wenger said. “How many goals does a centre forward have to score?

“We are a team that goes forward a lot and players spend a lot of time in the final third.

“His movement is exceptional and his confidence is so high that he takes advantages of all situations. I believe that the captaincy has helped too.”

Super Van gets Arsenal back in the premiership.

Arsenal hat trick hero super Robin van Persie struck a hat trick at Stamford Bridge to get Arsenal back in the premiership race. Arsene has managed to maintain his cool despite pressure from both supporters and fans about the team's bad start. Joy and laughter has finally returned to Emirates stadium again.

The Arsenal captain had this to say after the game:
"I feel I can score every time I go out on to the pitch.
"For me it’s just the best feeling to have. It doesn’t really matter against who we play, we always create chances so that means I always have a go. Then it’s up to me to score.
"I’ll miss chances, but I’ll score them as well. To have that feeling is one of the best things in life."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says his side achieved a "great win" after edging Chelsea 5-3 at Stamford Bridge to move up to sixth in the Premier League. Santos and Walcott also fired a goal each to make in 5 whilst Mata, Terry and Lampard only managed to reduce the goal margin to a respectable one.
Wenger praises his captain Robin van Persie's "exceptional class" following the Dutch international's hat-trick, which means the striker has scored 27 goals from 27 games in 2011.
As Arsenal face Marseille, the question now is will Arsene start Robin? Arsene has admitted that he is likely to make some changes to the team that went to Stamford. Wenger having revealed that he doesnt want to overplay Ramsey and he doesnt want to lose captain RVP, he might rest the two and put either Chamakh or Park as central striker.

The manager is also likely going to rest the number one short stopper and give Lukasz Fabianski a chance.Which other changes do you think the manager will make? Post your comments.

Goal.com Predicts: Chelsea 2-2 Arsenal....Do you agree?

Goal.com has predicted that the much awaited debut will end Chelsea 2-2 Arsenal. Wenger will be grateful that Arsenal's nemesis Didier Drogba will be suspended for the clash at Stamford Bridge but knows his side face their biggest test since the club's defeat at Tottenham at the start of the month.

Van Persie only needs half a yard to work the ball into a position where he can shoot at goal with his left foot, and I won't be surprised if he gets the better of Terry this weekend.

Theo Walcott has been in patchy form this season but has an important role to play this weekend – both offensively and defensively. Going forward, he will have to improve his decision-making and final ball if he is to get the better of Ashley Cole.

The former Arsenal man is one of the best left-backs in the world and is wise enough to know exactly what Walcott is going to do. But Walcott is so fast that he only needs to break through once and pick out the right pass for Arsenal to score.

Equally important, though, is that Walcott pins Cole back so the Chelsea full-back can't bomb forward at will to support their attacks. He is a key out-ball for them and Arsenal need to limit Chelsea's options when they have the ball.

Frank Lampard has done a very good job this season of proving that he is a long way from finished, which seemed a knee-jerk conclusion reached by some people on the basis of a handful of quiet games. Arsenal have been very brittle at the back and Lampard will keep getting himself in the box waiting for that chance to fire shots on the Gunners' goal.

Lampard relies on his football brain to make a difference on the pitch and in Alex Song he comes up against a strong, tenacious athlete. Song is excellent at winning the ball and playing it simple, so he can win the battle if he makes sure he is always close to Lampard. The problem he has is if he switches off for a couple of seconds – which does happen – and the next thing he knows Lampard is putting the ball in the back of the net.

This is going to be a very interesting battle, not least because Johan Djourou is likely to play out of position at right-back this weekend. I think Djourou has the potential to be a first-choice center-back for Arsenal for many years but I worry about how schooled he is in the art of playing at full-back.

Juan Mata will take advantage of any mistakes because he has shown in his brief time at Chelsea how clever he is, on and off the ball. He's not the kind of player who will pick up the ball and run at 100 miles per hour, he will find space off Djourou and try to open Arsenal up. Mata is not at David Silva's level just yet but I do expect him to be a massive factor in the outcome of the match.

It feels like ages since Fernando Torres was sent off against Swansea but he will return straight to the Chelsea team with Didier Drogba suspended. He will be fresh and raring to go against an Arsenal side who he knows are leaky defensively.

Torres will get chances, that's almost guaranteed. He has looked sharp this season when he has played and I think he will try to pull onto Per Mertesacker. The German obviously has his strengths but pace is not one of them, and I do worry for Arsenal that Torres will be able to isolate Mertesacker and then let his pace and finishing to the rest.

Will Chelsea land Arsenal target Hazard?

Chelsea are the favourites to land £40 million-rated youngster Eden Hazard, according to Lille's Academy director Jean-Michel Vandamme.
Andre-Villas Boas is keen to replace Chelsea's 'ageing' stars Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka and Frank Lampard who are in the twilight of their careers at Stamford Bridge.

The Portuguese has already stated his admiration for Genk's Kevin De Bruyne, but it is Lille star Hazard is currently attracting most attention around Europe.

Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Inter Milan are all believed to be pursuing the 20-year-old, but it is Chelsea who are leading the hunt, according to reports.

Inter captain Javier Zanetti recently confirmed the Italians are "very interested" in Hazard.
"Eden is certainly willing to stay at Lille at least until next summer," Vandamme was quoted as saying in the Daily Mail. "The buyer will have to come up with a lot of money - let's say he is not currently to go for less than £40 million.

"Chelsea has been following him the closest. The Spaniards have not manifested themselves yet, but I think they are playing it smart and will call when they know they have to - I'm talking about Real Madrid, but also about Barcelona."

Hazard's agent has already revealed that Arsenal failed in their attempt to sign the playmaker during the summer transfer window.
What do you think Arsene should do to avoid what happened with Mata? Post your comments below.

Wenger finds cure for Messiosis disease in Spain

Sevilla goalkeeper Javi Varas is being linked with a move to Arsenal in the summer.
The 29-year-old has hit the headlines in Spain after saving Lionel Messi's penalty at the weekend, with Los Rojiblancos holding Barca to a 0-0 draw in La Liga, allowing Levante to take a shock lead in the table.
Cadena Ser reports that Arsene Wenger has put the keeper on his Arsenal radar, with the Frenchman eager to strengthen his goalkeeping ranks at the Emirates.

The report goes on to claim Wenger has asked for additional reports on the player as he weighs up his options, whilst a handful of other stoppers are thought to be of interest to Arsenal.

Wojciech Szczesny has made the No.1 jersey his own in north London after a fine start to the campaign, but with Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski tipped to leave the club next year, experience could be key to providing some competition to the Arsenal first choice.

Do you think Wojciech Szczesny will lose his number one shirt if Javi Varas comes to the Emirates? Post your comments.

Arsenal positive over Vermaelen injury

Morning Gooners.

Crisis? What crisis? That's how we might look back on this period in our history many years from now as Arsenal win their 7th game out of their last eight with a 2-1 victory in the Carling Cup against Bolton.

As Orbinho pointed out on Twitter last night, it's fair to say Arsene Wenger does take this competition seriously having put out a team which has progressed to the quarter finals for the ninth season in a row. And you could see from the team sheet the manager wanted us to win the tie with the likes of  Thomas Vermaelen, Andrey Arshavin and Yossi Benayoun all picked to start the game.

I wasn't at the game so my thoughts on it come from the highlights I've watched and the radio commentary I listened to. But it's clear that whilst we sometimes expect to see our young players come to the fore on these nights, it was our experienced players who won us the game.

The first half seemed to be a pretty even affair. Alex Oxlade Chamberlain with one of the Gunners better chances if he had chosen to shoot early when in acres of space rather than try and beat Zat Knight. His shot/cross eventually going high and wide.

The commentary I was listening to on Five Live Sports Extra gave me the impression we've signed a replacement for Emmanuel Adebayor in Ju Young Park, in the way the South  Korean was caught offside. Perhaps it's the way Arsenal prefer to play the ball around and about rather than play that defence splitting pass early that made Park stray off side but in another way it's a good sign he's getting in the right sort of areas.

From the middle of the first half it appeared that Bolton came out of their shell and started to make some serious attempts at breaching Arsenal's goal. Lukasz Fabianski having to be at his best to stop efforts from Darren Pratley and Gael Kakuta testing the Poland international.

The guile of Benayoun was evident as he tried to put Wenger's men in the lead, twisting and turning on the left and firing in a shot which went just wide. The home side's next effort on goal came from Thomas Vermaelen who fired in a vicious free kick which must have stung the palms of the Bolton keeper Adam Bogdan.

Park was next to test Bolton's flame haired keeper with a low shot. I think it was fair to say the South Korean was warming up for the second half and finding his feet in his second start for the club since he signed in August.

Two minutes into the second half the Gunners were a goal down. And what is it with our former players scoring against us at the moment. First Sebastian Larsson and now Fabrice Muamba. The former youth team player robbed Emmanuel Frimpong of the ball outside the area, played a neat one-two with Ivan Klasnic and slammed home his shot into the roof of the net.

Bolton had their tails up and were in the driving seat. You were left wondering who out of this crop of players would stand up and make the difference and we didn't have to wait long to find out. Within five minutes of Muamba putting Owen Coyle's men ahead, Arsenal had pulled them back level again.

It was Andrey Arshavin who found the back of the net. He collected the ball from Oxlade Chamberlain on the right, dribbled at goal and with Knight not attacking the ball, fired it low between his legs and into the far corner, with Bogdan having no idea the shot was coming.

The goal was something we've not seen from Arshavin's locker for quite a while. He last scored for the Gunners last month, but we should really expect a player of his quality score many more goals for us.

And within nine minutes of going behind, Arsenal were ahead. Again Arshavin was involved. Park had strayed into an offside position as the Russian took up the ball. The South Korean realised he couldn't be played through and got back on side. Arshavin spotting the space played Park in and the striker finished the move with a stunning right footed shot which he curled Thierry Henry style into the far corner, beating Bogdan diving to his left.

The home side backed off their attacking style and it was the Fabianski show as Bolton put the heat on. The goalkeeper had to be at his best to stop a vicious shot from Chris Eagles. A Gary Cahill downward header next to be saved as the England man got above Sebastien Squillaci.

The Gunner held on to progress into the last eight of the competition in front of a crowd of 56,628 – a record for this season’s competition.

I was personally impressed with Arshavin and Park. I thought they both had a lot to prove prior to the game and I hope with the Russian especially he come back into some really good form now. We saw from his cameo against Stoke at the weekend he can change games and he did so again last night when we needed someone to step up.

The South Korean as well did well. For all of his roaming offside, he made up for it was a peach of a goal. A cracking strike which any player would be happy to have as their first ever Arsenal goal. It will be interesting to see now how the pecking order for the strikers shapes up, with Marouane Chamakh not even included in last night's squad.

Special mention must go to both Nico Yennaris and Ignasi Miquel. Both were played out of  position as full backs last night and neither had a bad game. It shows Arsenal do have strength in depth, although I would imagine neither would really like to play in those positions again.

However we do have an injury to Thomas Vermaelen to be concerned about. Wenger revealing post match the Belgium international suffered a calf strain which forced him to be substituted with four minutes to go. The Frenchman said he could be "short" for Saturday's match with Chelsea but would be at the training ground today for an assessment.

Reviewing the match, Wenger said:

"In the first half I believe we had the chances. In the second half we were caught straight away losing the ball in our own half and they scored. From then on of course they tested us. The more experienced players then took charge of the game, especially Arshavin, Park and Benayoun - they made the difference.
"I have to congratulate the team because we had two young full-backs who are usually central players. In midfield we were very young and we have shown good spirit against a good Bolton side."
All in all a good work out last night for some members of the first team squad who haven't seen many minutes in these last few weeks.

We march on to the last eight, with the draw taking place on Saturday lunchtime prior to the kick off at Stamford Bridge. What's the betting we draw Andre Villas-Boas' men who face Everton at Stamford Brigde tonight?

Arsenal 2 - 1 Bolton Wanderers

Arsenal moved on to the fifth round of the Carling Cup with a 2-1 home win over Bolton Wanderers this evening at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal couldn't find the net in the first half as they looked at a number of chances and decided that they weren't cool enough to score before Bolton started the second half with a goal by former Gunner Fabrice Muamba, combining with Darren Pratley. It would only take nine minutes for the home side to turn things around completely, though, goals from Arshavin and Park (hey, look; he does exist, and hey, look; his international form is no Lebanon-fueled illusion!) putting Arsenal in front for good.
Star-divide
The lineup at the start for Arsenal contained a couple of surprises: Nico Yennaris was in at right back, his first senior appearance, and Andrei Arshavin finally--FINALLY--was put in his natural position behind the striker, Park Ju Young. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had a half opportunity early on, but ended up swinging out wide rather than rifling a shot in, and his cross was too deep for Park. Park, soon after, let fly from 25, testing Adam Bogdan, who pushed the ball away.

Arsenal continued to have the better of the opening half hour, Yossi Benayoun curling an effort wide of the far post from the left. Ricardo Gardner tripped up Chamberlain in the rain, and from the resulting free kick, Arshavin left it for Thomas Vermaelen, whose shot went about 150 miles per hour towards the low corner. Bogdan, again, though, was up to it, pushing it around the post. Park's tricky effort from 12 was saved, and halftime arrived with no score.

It wouldn't last much past the restart, though.

Emmanuel Frimpong lost the ball near Arsenal's area, and Muamba laid the ball off to Pratley moving up the left. Sebastien Squllaci was backing off, and Muamba stopped his run short, waiting for the cutback, and when it came, he made no mistake. 1-0 to Bolton, the home crowd silent.

They'd only have to wait six minutes, though, for things to level up again. Benayoun picked up a ball over the top on the right, passed it inside to Arshavin, and the Russian ran straight at the Bolton defense. His deceptively powerful shot, so quick on the draw, went between Zat Knight's legs and into the far corner. He looked very good in his new role, and the goal was no less than he deserved. In the celebration, he gave instructions to Coquelin, too, rather than celebrating, which is an encouraging sign of leadership from a man often accused of not caring too much.

Arsenal had regained control, and three minutes later, their South Korean international scored a goal straight out of the Thierry Henry handbook. If Park was Thierry, Arshavin filled in in the Dennis Bergkamp role, waiting and waiting for Park to check his run. Park slyly peeled off the last defender, who lost him entirely, and Arshavin put it where Park could hit it first time. Hit it he did, curled expertly off the far post and in. As good a combination goal as you will see, and all Arsenal would need on the night.

The introduction of Chris Eagles nearly made a big difference for Bolton, his first effort swerving and causing Fabianski all kinds of issues. Ryo Miyaichi and Oguzhan Ozyakup came on for Arsenal, before Fabianski saved from Ivan Klasnic as ninety minutes approached. Gary Cahill nearly scored from a header at the far post from a corner, but Fabianski did enough. Daniel Boateng entered the fray for Arsenal, getting his senior team debut as well. Klasnic nearly scored once more from Klasnic's cross, but skied his shot under pressure. Cahill had a chance, but Miyaichi did excellent work to get in a great challenge on the shot at the last moment (if he can defend that well, he's automatically my favorite player) (<3 Ryo). The final whistle arrived soon thereafter, and Arsenal had moved on to the quarterfinals.

Is Andrei Arshavin going back home?

Anzhi Makhachkala have identified Arsenal trio Andrei Arshavin, Marouane Chamakh and Sebastien Squillaci as possible transfer targets in January.

The Russian side have billionaire owners who grabbed headlines this summer when they managed to convince Inter Milan striker Samuel Eto'o to make the move to Anzhi.

Previously they had offered Roberto Carlos huge wages to play in Russia and it now seems as though they have targeted Arsenal as a club they want to do business with in the New Year.

According to tribalfootball.com, Anzhi will continue to build their squad when the transfer opens in January and plan a triple raid on the Gunners.

Arshavin has been consistently linked with a move away from the Emirates after a disappointing last 18 months and may consider a return back to Russia where he enjoyed plenty of success with Zenit St Petersburg.

Striker Chamakh is another player who has failed to live up to expectations and has been linked with a return to France. Despite manager Arsene Wenger insisting he would not be sold, the striker is currently being used primarily as a substitute and should an offer come in then the Gunners may consider cashing in on the player.

Arsenal signed the player on a free transfer and could almost certainly demand in excess of £10million for the striker.

Squillaci, the third Arsenal player Anzhi are interested in, has fallen well down the pecking order at the Emirates and it is likely that he would be allowed to leave if an appropriate offer was made.

Anzhi certainly have the financial capabilities to make an impressive offer to the players and the club, but it will depend on Arsenal as to whether they are prepared to lose the trio.

Arsenal to face Bolton in the Carling Cup

Bolton will be looking to put the Premier League to one side tonight as they take on Arsenal, as they are currently third from bottom after a loss to Sunderland on the weekend which makes it three losses in four games. One of these three losses was thanks to the Gunners when they defeated Bolton 3-0 last month.
Arsenal will be happy to see the return of Thomas Vermaelen, the Belgian international, who has been plagued with injuries over the last couple of seasons. But they are resting a number of key players ahead of the match against Chelsea on the weekend. Robin van Persie, Alex Song and Per Mertesacker are among the players who won’t be playing tonight.

Manchester United are the other Premiership team who are in action tonight and they will play Aldershot. The League Two team have not progressed past the third round of the competition since 1984 and are the only team outside the top two divisions left in the tournament.
United will be looking to put the embarrassment of their 6-1 defeat to their closest rivals Manchester City behind them, and will be hoping for a dominant display over the lowest ranked team left in the tournament. Several first team players are expected to be rested but it is likely that Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen and Antonio Valencia will all be in action. United will be without Ryan Giggs, who is injured, and Jonny Evans, who was red carded against City on the weekend.
Elsewhere, Cardiff will take on their Championship rivals Burnley. This could be an exciting match up as Cardiff have scored ten goals in their last three games and the Bluebirds have only lost once at home this season.
The Bluebirds will be without Kenny Miller who suffered a head wound on the weekend after he clashed with team mate Ben Turner but Burnley are boosted by the return of Jay Rodriguez and Charlie Austin.
The last match tonight sees Crystal Palace play Southampton in what should be a lively encounter as Southampton are having a great season as they sit on top of the Championship. Crystal Palace have only lost two games at home in this competition since 1995.

BARCELONA LURING THEO WALCOTT

The news has alerted Barca boss Pep Guardiola - who could make a move for Walcott in the new year.

Walcott, whose current deal expires in 2013, is confident he has the skill, pace and firepower to emulate Barcelona star Lionel Messi, playing as a striker rather than as a winger.

The magical Messi, who also started life playing wide on the wing, scored a staggering 55 goals in all competitions for Barcelona last season and has continued in a similar vein this term.

Now Walcott is hoping to get the chance to show that he can make an equally dramatic transition and show what he can do as a leading striker.

Walcott delivered his plea for a career-changing positional change in a heart-to-heart with Arsene Wenger over the summer.

That came as the Gunners under-fire boss voiced genuine fears that his former Southampton whiz kid could join the exodus of big names out of the Emirates.

But Walcott believes the switch could transform him into the sort of player that has had Messi mesmerising central defenders all over the world.

And with teenage new boy Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain already emerging as a force to be reckoned with on the wing, Walcott has urged Wenger to give him a go with a new role that has considerably enhanced his England prospects.

And this season, Walcott has already caught the eye as a hitman. And he has already scored three goals this season.

He said: “I believe I can give so much more to the team playing up front, with the runs I can make off the ball. And I just love hitting the back of the net as well,”

“At times I feel a bit, if not wasted, then in and out of games on the right. I just want it more and more, having scored a few last season. I’m not a winger and I think plenty of people know that.

“I’ve done OK out there, but I’d love to play down the middle,” Walcott added

Top 10 Hilarious Arsene Wenger Quotes

Arsene Wenger is a trove of information. His knowledge about the beautiful game is amongst the best in the world and you can generally see that transpiring in press conferences. Apart from football, his economics also generally dominate his media briefings. But over the years, Wenger has delivered several witty quotes and has never failed to take a dig at his opponents whenever the opportunity arises. So, here are my 10 favourite Wenger quotes.

1. On Jose Mourinho, “He’s out of order, disconnected with reality and disrespectful. When you give success to stupid people, it makes them more stupid sometimes and not more intelligent.”

2. “A football team is like a beautiful woman. When you do not tell her, she forgets she is beautiful.”

3. “Everyone thinks they have the prettiest wife at home.” This was after Alex Ferguson claimed that he had the best team in 2002.

4. When Jose Reyes revealed that he wanted to leave Arsenal for Real Madrid, “It’s like you wanting to marry Miss World and she doesn’t want you. I can try to help you but if she does not want to marry you what can I do?”

5. “I don’t kick dressing room doors or the cat or even football journalists.”

6. “I watched it when I got home and it looked very bad. You ask 100 people, 99 will say it’s very bad and the hundredth will be Mark Hughes”, on Adebayor’s tackle on RVP.

7. Wenger had more to say about Reyes, “Despite the global warming, England is still not warm enough for him.”

8. “Ferguson’s out of order. He has lost all sense of reality. He is going out looking for a confrontation, then asking the person he is confronting to apologise. He’s pushed the cork in a bit far this time.”

9. “I didn’t know the English were good at swimming. I have been in this country for 12 years and I haven’t seen a swimming pool.”

10. On Sol Campbell leaving Arsenal, “It is a big surprise to me because he cancelled his contract to go abroad. Have you sold Portsmouth to a foreign country?”

There are many more such quotes, but these are the ones that stand out to me. Happy Birthday Mr Wenger. In Arsene We Trust! Please add your own personal quotes in the comments tab below.

Park has bright future - Arsene

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger predicts big things from new signing Park Chu-Young and has defended the South Korean's slow start in London.
Wenger believes the 26-year-old attacker has what it takes to be a success at Arsenal, and reminded people that Gunners legends Thierry Henry and Robert Pires took time to settle at the club too.
Park was signed by Wenger in late August from French Ligue 2 club Monaco but has only made one appearance since, in the League Cup against Shrewsbury.
Despite his struggle for game-time at club level, the South Korea international skipper has been in fine form with his country, netting seven goals in four matches since joining Arsenal.
Wenger told Arsenal Player he knew Park was an intelligent player with a good attitude, and backed him to succeed at the club.
"Some players like Pires and Henry took four, five, six months and they became exceptional players. Park arrived two months ago so that's normal," Wenger said.
"Some people judged our players very quickly in a negative way and slowly they changed their mind through their performances. I prefer it that way round than the other."
"Some players make you jump off your seat in the early stages and then disappoint you after. These players will win over all the sceptical people and Park is one of them."
"I have been impressed by his intelligence and his attitude. He is well-appreciated and rated by his team-mates and by the staff as well - we think he is a quality player."

The return of the dragon - The long awaited Thomas Vermaelen come back

Thomas Vermaelen has taken part in a full first team training session (pictures here) as Arsene Wenger prepares his squad for tomorrow night’s Carling Cup clash with Bolton at the Emirates.
The Belgian international has not featured for the Gunners since the second leg Champions League qualification game with Udinese exactly two months ago, but now appears on the cusp of a return to action.
Vermaelen underwent a small surgical procedure on his right Achilles at the beginning of September with a view to rectifying an issue which had troubled his left foot for much of the season before. The Belgian was restricted to just five appearances between August 2010 and May 2011 and has appeared only three times this term.
It remains to be seen whether the centre-back will be selected as part of the Gunners’ rotated squad for the visit of the Trotters, although with Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny likely to be rested ahead of Sunday’s showdown with Chelsea there is a chance he could be included on the bench. Sebastien Squillaci (remember him?) and Ignasi ‘the hair’ Miquel are the other options available for selection.

"Ramsey has more to offer", Arsene Wenger

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes that there is much more to come from Aaron Ramsey and has backed the Welshman to reach double figures in goals scored this season.

Ramsey has two goals to his name so far and scored Arsenal’s winner in their 1-0 victory over Marseille in the Champions League in France.

The Welshman’s efforts have given Wenger cause to hope that Ramsey can push on as he seeks to become a real goalscoring midfielder in the mould of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard.

Asked whether he believes Ramsey could reach double figures this season, Wenger was clear.

"Yes, I think he can", said the Frenchman to Arsenal’s official site.

"He has scored against Tottenham, against Marseille.

"He has that ability to get in the box and when he has a chance he finishes it.

"He has always had that since he started."

And Wenger believes even better is on the cards from the young midfielder.

"There is much more to come from Aaron Ramsey and I believe he can reach double figures."

Robin van Persie super free kick

Robin van Persie has again taken the time to reflect on his winning free-kick against Sunderland at the Emirates last week and lamented the fact that for so long at set pieces he couldn’t hit a cow’s arse with a banjo.
The Dutch international has long been Arsenal’s chief candidate for all shots on goal from outside the box, but aside from a dodgy deflected effort scored on New Year’s day at Birmingham City, had spent much of the last ten months taking aim at members of the crowd or trying to kick balls out of various stadia.

Luckily, because he’s so damned awesome, RVP looks as though he’s finally found the necessary magic to turn Emirates groans into moments of celebration. Speaking to the Arsenal official matchday programme ahead of yesterday’s 3-1 win over Stoke City, the captain stated:
“Obviously it was a very nice feeling to score that free-kick and win the match. It was my first one for a while – in part I’ve been unlucky, hitting a couple of good efforts onto the woodwork in recent times, but partly I’ve not been good enough.
“I’d missed too many in the past few months and wasn’t happy about it – my shot is one of my strengths and I knew I could do better. I came close against Bolton a few weeks ago, so had a feeling I was getting closer, but the ball still needs to go in.”

Pay attention, here comes the science bit…
“Strangely, when you don’t really think about the end result I think you have a bigger chance. Everything needs to be in place when you’re taking a free-kick – every single step you make, your run-up, your body position, making sure you lean back a little but not too far otherwise your shot will fly over.
“It’s all like mathematics – it has to come together. If you’re out by even five per cent, it’ll go off target.
“It’s a very long way from putting the ball down to scoring – there are so many things to organise and do perfectly. Luckily everything came off and created a good moment for all of us.”

[PLAYER RATINGS] Arsenal 3-1 Stoke: How The Gunners Got On…

Arsenal beat Stoke 3-1 at the Emirates thanks to sub Robin van Persie who, not for the first time this season, rescued the Gunners when they were struggling to break down a stubborn defence. Stoke set their stall out with the predictable game plan of defending in numbers and relying on set pieces.
Gervinho took his goal well, then the referee awarded Stoke a very generous free kick which lead to the equaliser as Arsenal conceded from a set piece once again. But with Chamakh leading the line and van Persie warming the bench, Arsenal were devoid of ideas and were struggling to get the second. Only when our main-man came on did we look dangerous, and the Dutchman bagged a double to lead Arsenal across the line. Here are my ratings:

Szczesny – 6.5 – Could do little for the goal and in all honesty didn’t have much else to do. Took a big chance when over-playing with the ball outside of his area, but got away with it.

Djourou – 6 – Did better than expected at right back, making a few good runs forward but his crossing was disappointing. Failed to cut out the header that lead to the Stoke goal.

Mertesacker – 7.5 – Assured performance from the German, dealing with most of what Stoke could throw at us. Looking more comfortable with every performance.

Koscielny – 7 – Like Per, did ok in dealing with the ariel threat of Stoke and gaining in confidence with every display. Lost out to Walters for the equaliser though.

Santos – 6 – Did ok, nothing special. Didn’t get forward as much as usual.

Song – 7 – Decent performance from the stand-in captain. Broke up play well and set up some attacks but nothing spectacular from Song.

Ramsey – 7.5 - Superb ball for the opener and had a couple of decent efforts on goal. Set the tempo well alongside Arteta.

Arteta – 7 - Kept things ticking over in midfield but once again wasn’t the creative force in midfield we all hoped he’d be
.
Walcott – 5.5 – Didn’t get in the game enough and only got behind his full back on one occasion. Not surprisingly subbed off. Needs to do a lot better.

Gervinho – 8 – Took his goal very well and was a lot more involved than in previous games. Set up both of Van Persie’s goals as well.

Chamakh – 5 – Useless. Totally ineffectual and never found his man with his attempted lay-offs. Missed two great chances to get on the scoresheet before being subbed off RVP.

SUBS:

Van Persie – 9 – Bagged a double and without him Arsenal would be a mid-table side. Thank god he’s fit and scoring goals.
Arshavin – 6 - Tried hard to make things happen and did ok for the limited time he was on the pitch.
Fimpong – N/A – Only for for a matter of minutes.
